Traditional Malay massage (urut)

Malay urut usually uses oil and pressure from the hands, thumbs and elbows on muscles and joints. It's often associated with postnatal care and relief from general aches. Our guide to traditional Malay massage covers it in more depth.

Foot reflexology

Reflexology applies pressure to specific points on the soles of the feet. It's very common in malls and foot massage shops across Malaysian cities, with short sessions of 30 to 60 minutes. See the foot reflexology guide.

Asian traditions

Thai massage

Traditional Thai massage is usually done without oil, in loose clothing, and combines pressure with assisted stretching. Many Malaysian outlets also offer "Thai oil massage", a version that uses oil.

Balinese massage

Balinese massage combines deep pressure, long strokes and scented oil. It's typically offered at day spas and hotel spas.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu comes from Japan and uses finger and palm pressure on specific points, usually over clothing.

Tuina

Tuina is a traditional Chinese medical massage using pushing, rubbing and pressing techniques. In Malaysia it's often offered by outlets that also do reflexology.

Western styles

Swedish massage

Swedish massage uses oil and long strokes at light to medium pressure. It's a common choice for anyone trying a full-body massage for the first time.

Deep tissue

Deep tissue uses slower, firmer pressure aimed at deeper muscle layers. It can feel uncomfortable, so tell the therapist how much pressure you want.

Aromatherapy

An aromatherapy massage is an oil massage with blended essential oils. If you have allergies or sensitive skin, ask what's in the oil before starting.

Choosing a type

  • First time: Swedish, or a short foot reflexology session.
  • Prefer to stay clothed: traditional Thai massage or shiatsu.
  • Want firm pressure: deep tissue or traditional urut, and say where your limit is.

If you're pregnant, injured or have a health condition, check with a doctor first and tell the therapist. For tips on picking a premises, read how to choose a massage centre.
